Poet reading at Poets’ Walk 2018

Calling all Poets: Submit original works for our juried live performance!

“May you live in interesting times…”

- Attributed to 19th century Chinese curse

Poets and playwrights have enhanced the exhibitions at Hudson Valley MOCA with their literary creations. We would like to invite you to submit works for one or two voices inspired by the art in How We Live. It should be a year for inspiration.

The Writing the Walls program was started 14 years ago by Mara Mills (Artistic Director, Studio Theater in Exile), along with Livia Straus (co-founder, Hudson Valley MOCA), and Jo-Ann Brody (Hudson Valley MOCA) to bring together art and word. Over the years, many playwrights and poets have explored the art and found inspiration for their writing.

Important Dates:

Submission Deadline: January 30th, 2020

A committee of writers, artists, and poets, who will not be submitting, will choose work for inclusion. All work is read anonymously.

Selection Deadline: February 2020

Selected poems/prose/plays will be framed and placed on the walls near the work that served as inspiration, as well as featured on the HVMOCA website and collected into a book.

Writing the Walls Poetry Reading: April 2020 (National Poetry Month)

Because of the fragility of some of the artwork in this exhibition and the growing number of poets and audience each year, we will be reading in the HVMOCA Black Box rather than in the gallery. The event reading and reception will be scheduled for one or two days, depending on the number of accepted submissions.

Submission Specifications:

You may submit up to three poems, which can be in one or two voices. The requirements for each poem or play are as follows:

1. Each poem must be one typed-page or less. Please include title of poem and artwork on each poem.

2. Please use Calibri font, size 11.

3. On a separate cover sheet, please put: Your name, address, email, and phone number, the title of the poem, and name of the work it corresponds with. (This is for tracking purposes.)

January 30, 2020 is the submission deadline for poems or plays. How We Live viewing hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm or by appointment. For an appointment, contact Jo-Ann Brody at joann.brody@hudsonvalleymoca.org.

Submissions should be emailed to both Mara Mills, mara.mills@studiotheaterinexile.com, and Jo-Ann Brody, joann.brody@hudsonvalleymoca.org. If you have any questions, please email Mara.
