Wind Farm

An ‘Illuminate Peekskill’ Project

Illuminating sculptures to light the way from the Peekskill MTA Station and up to Historic Downtown Peekskill.

This interactive light sculpture celebrates the importance of green energy through larger than life illuminated pinwheels. Each pinwheel rotates and illuminates with wind power using 400-watt wind turbine engines that power the RGB LED lights. Additionally, a solar panel is attached to the backend of the Pinwheel for days when limited wind power is available. The Pinwheels rotate around the 10’-14’ high aluminum poles using outdoor rated sleeve bearings, allowing the Pinwheels to rotate 360-degrees.

The diameter of each Pinwheel ranges from 3’-6’, the blade design based on the simple cutouts of childhood pinwheels. The blades of the Pinwheel are made of styrene, a durable, long-lasting plastic that can be bent when heat is applied. Each Pinwheel is white, with the color being applied to them using the RGB LEDs.

The wind turbine engine is secured within an aluminum pod set on the backside of the Pinwheel blades. The project can be illuminated 24/7, allowing light to be reflected off the styrene fan blades in both day and evening times.
