Origins Catalogue

from $8.00

September 13, 2008 – July 26, 2009

Origins began with a request by the Westchester Arts Council that all Westchester art institutions have an exhibition Fall 2008 focusing on artists using clay.  ORIGINS has a theological tone, as it should- synonyms: genesis and birth, and for us it begins with two poles, the seminal photos and video work of Mierle Laderman Ukeles and Anna Mendieta, and the sculpture of Carl Andre and Richard Long. The former works made by women artists, more about personal involvement and edification, and the later male produced works, cool and removed.

There are thirty artists from fifteen countries, the earliest Carl Andre’s 1969 Aluminum squares and the more recent, Zhang Huan’s 2008 bust of a soldier made of ash. The oldest artist is Louise Bourgeois (97), the youngest is Daniel Silver (35).

Participating Artists: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Martin Puryear, Gregor Schneider, Carl Andre, Richard Long, Michael Heizer, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Ashley Bickerton, Cady Noland, Rona Pondick, Ann Hamilton, Ana Mendieta, Rebecca Warren, Nathalie Djurberg, Sigalit Landau, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Anselm Kiefer, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Franz West, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Brian Knep, Bruce Bickford, Giuseppe Penone, Carl Andre, Danielle Kraay, Daisy Youngblood, Huma Bhabha, Zhang Huan, Daniel Silver, Wolfgang Laib
